Norway suits students who want a broad, flexible course offer — from vocational subjects through to master’s and doctoral study — and who learn best in small groups where teachers are easy to reach. Internationalisation is treated as a priority across the education system, so international students are a normal part of campus life rather than an add-on.

Research strengths sit around energy, maritime industries, aquaculture, aluminium and the sciences, and teaching is regularly informed by that work. It suits self-reliant students: classes are discussion-driven, daily life is outdoorsy and expensive budgeting matters, and administration from admission to the study permit is handled largely on your own initiative.

Entry requirements

• For a bachelor’s programme: a completed secondary qualification (12 years of schooling for most Indian applicants) with the required transcripts and certificates.
• For a master’s programme: a relevant bachelor’s degree, with any specific course requirements or work-experience expectations the programme sets.
• English-taught programmes: IELTS or TOEFL at the band the programme requires.
• Norwegian-taught programmes: a Norwegian language certificate at the required level; many institutions offer language preparation alongside study.
• Documents not in English or Norwegian usually need a certified translation.

How the application process works

• Shortlist programmes and confirm entry requirements, current fee status, and the application round that covers your intake.
• Prepare and translate documents (degree certificates, marks statements, passport, photographs, language proof, motivation letter, recommendation letters where asked).
• Apply through the national admissions service or the institution’s own portal, as your programme requires, before the published deadline.
• Receive your admission result and accept the study place by the stated date.
• Apply for your study permit with the admission documents, financial evidence and insurance.
• After permission is granted, book travel, arrange accommodation, register your address and enrol at your institution on arrival.

Funding your studies

Norway’s fee policy for students from outside the EU and EEA has changed in recent years and now differs between institutions, so the first thing to establish for any shortlist is the current fee status of that institution and programme. Living costs, particularly rent, are higher than in most other study destinations and should be budgeted honestly.

After graduation

Norwegian qualifications follow the European structure — a three-year bachelor’s, a two-year master’s and doctoral study afterwards — and are recognised across Europe.
