Finland suits students of technology, engineering, design, business, education, health sciences and the natural sciences — subjects taught at universities and universities of applied sciences that stay internationally focused despite their size. Research is concentrated in universities and state-funded specialised institutes, and undergraduate students are often exposed to it earlier than they expect.

It is a strong fit for students who value a quiet, organised and egalitarian everyday culture: things run on time, English is widely spoken, and teachers are approachable in what are usually small classes. Students who are comfortable with long, dark winters and an independent style of study tend to settle best.

Entry requirements

• For a bachelor’s programme: a completed secondary qualification (12 years of schooling for most Indian applicants) with the required transcripts and certificates.
• For a master’s programme: a relevant bachelor’s degree, with any work-experience or prerequisite requirements set by the programme.
• English-taught programmes: IELTS, TOEFL or an accepted equivalent, at the band the programme requires.
• Finnish- or Swedish-taught programmes: a language certificate at the level the programme requires.
• Documents not in English, Finnish or Swedish usually need a certified translation.

How the application process works

• Shortlist programmes and confirm entry requirements, tuition or fees, scholarships and the application round your programme uses.
• Prepare and translate documents (degree certificates, marks statements, passport, photographs, language proof, motivation letter, recommendation letters where asked).
• Submit the application through the institution’s portal — many programmes take part in a national joint application round with a fixed deadline.
• Receive your admission result and accept the study place by the date given.
• Apply for your study residence permit with the admission documents, financial evidence and insurance.
• Once permission is granted, book travel, arrange accommodation, register your address and enrol at your institution on arrival.

Funding your studies

Tuition generally applies to students from outside the EU and EEA on English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes, while Finnish- and Swedish-taught study is charged differently — universities usually run scholarship schemes that can offset part of the tuition for successful applicants.
