Italy suits students drawn to design, fashion, architecture, engineering, the arts and humanities, as well as business and hospitality programmes taught in English. Public universities are deeply rooted in research, and class sizes in many programmes stay manageable compared with larger destination countries.

It is a strong fit if you want a internationally recognised degree, a lower cost of living than Northern Europe, and time to learn Italian alongside your studies. Students who are comfortable being proactive — accommodation, permit of stay and part-time logistics are organised more independently than in some countries — tend to settle in well.

Entry requirements

• For a bachelor’s programme: a completed secondary qualification (12 years of schooling for most Indian applicants) plus the transcripts and certificates your university asks for.
• For a master’s programme: a relevant bachelor’s degree; some programmes specify a minimum academic performance, which differs university to university.
• English-taught programmes: proof of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent). Some universities accept alternatives such as a medium-of-instruction letter — always confirm with the specific programme.
• Italian-taught programmes: an Italian language certificate at the level the programme requires.
• Documents that are not in English or Italian usually need sworn translation.

How the application process works

• Shortlist programmes and confirm entry requirements, fees and intake dates for the current cycle.
• Prepare and translate documents (degree certificates, marks statements, passport, photographs, language proof, recommendation letters).
• Submit university applications through each institution’s portal before its deadline.
• Receive and accept your offer letter, and complete pre-enrolment steps requested for your country.
• Apply for your student visa at the Italian embassy or consulate with the admission documents and financial evidence they require.
• Once the visa is granted, book travel, arrange insurance and accommodation, and complete arrival registrations (permit of stay, tax code, university enrolment).

Funding your studies

Tuition at public universities is commonly income-scaled, and many regions award merit- or need-based scholarships that can contribute towards fees and living costs. Italian degrees follow the Bologna structure — a first cycle (laurea) and a second cycle (laurea magistrale) — so progression to further study abroad is straightforward.
