Who thrives studying in Malta

Malta suits students who want to study in English in a small, safe EU country with a mild climate and a short commute between campus, home and the sea. Programme choice is strongest in business, finance, information technology, hospitality and the health sciences, taught at the public university and a group of private institutions.

It is also a practical base for students interested in the island’s services economy — financial services, technology and gaming, tourism and professional services all recruit from local campuses, and several international firms are headquartered here. Students who are comfortable in an intimate campus setting, where classes are small and lecturers are easy to reach, settle in quickly.

Entry requirements

  • For a bachelor’s programme: a completed secondary qualification (12 years of schooling for most Indian applicants) with the transcripts the institution asks for.
  • For a master’s programme: a relevant bachelor’s degree, plus any subject prerequisites set by the programme.
  • English-taught programmes: IELTS, TOEFL or an accepted equivalent at the band the institution requires.
  • Maltese-taught programmes: proof of Maltese at the required level — most international students choose English-taught routes instead.
  • Documents not in English usually need a certified translation.

How the application process works

  • Shortlist programmes and confirm entry requirements, tuition, any scholarship deadlines and the intake you are aiming for.
  • Prepare and translate documents (degree certificates, marks statements, passport, photographs, language proof, recommendation letters, statement of purpose).
  • Apply directly through each institution’s admissions portal before its deadline.
  • Receive and accept your offer, and pay any deposit or registration fee the institution requests.
  • Apply for your student visa with the admission documents and the financial evidence the authorities require.
  • After the visa is granted, travel, arrange accommodation and complete university enrolment — and check the residence registration steps students must complete shortly after arrival.

Funding your studies

Fees are set by each institution: the public university and the private colleges price differently, and private providers dominate the international programme market. Scholarships and fee reductions exist at several institutions but are awarded on their own criteria and deadlines, so we verify the current fee sheet and scholarship calls for each shortlisted institution before you commit.

Education loans from Indian banks are a common route — see our loans page for how the process usually works, and ask us for a cost sheet covering tuition, rent, insurance, living costs and visa fees.

Documents you will usually need

Maltese institutions and the visa office ask for overlapping sets of paperwork, and translation or notarisation steps are easier to arrange before you are in a hurry. Preparing everything early is the simplest way to protect your timeline. The full list sits below.

After graduation

Maltese qualifications follow the European degree structure, so progression to further study elsewhere in Europe is straightforward. Post-study options are governed by current Maltese and EU rules and must be confirmed for your intake before you plan around them; as an EU member, Malta is also a base from which graduates can look further afield in Europe.
