Types of funding available

• The Deutschlandstipendium, a national programme at participating German universities that supports high-achieving, committed students — awarded on achievement rather than family income or nationality.
• DAAD programmes: DAAD is the German Academic Exchange Service, a joint organisation of Germany’s higher education institutions that promotes international academic exchange. Its database lists DAAD awards alongside funding from many other providers.
• Foundation scholarships: German political and religious foundations — for example the Heinrich Böll Foundation and KAAD — fund students from varied backgrounds, interests and fields.
• Erasmus Mundus: EU-funded joint master’s programmes that students can take at universities in Germany and across Europe.
• University-level aid, part-time income where visa rules allow it, and education loans (see our loans page) fill the rest of many budgets.

Who can apply

• International students holding an offer on a German programme, or a place on a participating Erasmus Mundus course.
• Criteria differ by scheme: some weigh academic merit, others financial need, field of study, home country or commitment to a foundation’s values.
• Language evidence follows the programme — English or German, whichever your degree is taught in.
• Many foundations look beyond marks — motivation, extracurricular commitment and fit with the foundation’s profile matter in the selection.

How to apply

• Find the schemes you fit (DAAD database, foundation pages, your university’s own aid office) and confirm eligibility.
• Prepare the standard file: transcripts, CV, motivation letter, references and language evidence.
• Some schemes run alongside university admission, others only after you hold an offer — apply in the right order.
• Submit inside each scheme’s own window and keep copies of everything you send.

Timelines

Application windows typically open months before the intake they fund, and each provider — DAAD, foundations, universities, Erasmus Mundus — runs its own calendar separate from university admission. Dates change every cycle, so we work from the current call.
