IELTS (International Language Testing System)

ELTS is the world’s proven test. Due to its high quality controls, IELTS is accepted by thousands of organizations in over 135 countries. IELTS is used by educational institutions to assess language ability for courses that are delivered in English. All candidates must complete four Modules – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking to obtain an IELTS Test Report Form. Candidates are tested in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. There is a choice between Academic and General Training in the Reading and Writing Modules.

Total Test Time

2 hours 45 minutes

The first three modules – Listening, Reading and Writing – must be completed in one day. The Speaking Module may be taken, at the discretion of the test center, in the period seven days before or after the other Modules.

The tests are designed to cover the full range of ability from non-user to expert user. Each paper is given a mark from 1-9 ( 9 being the highest mark) You will then receive an average of the 4 papers for your final results. As a rough guide, if you wish to study abroad or work in a profession (doctor, engineer, chemist etc) You will need between 6.5 and 7.5. from the academic exam. For immigration purposes, 4 or 5 from the easier general paper is common.

Academic or General Training

The Academic Reading and Writing Modules assess whether a candidate is ready to study or work in the medium of English at an undergraduate, postgraduate or professional level. The General Training Reading and Writing Modules are not designed to test the full range of formal language skills required for academic purposes, but emphasise basic survival skills in a broad social and educational context. General Training is suitable for candidates who are going to English speaking countries to complete their secondary education, to undertake work experience or training programmes not at degree level, or for immigration purposes to Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It is the responsibility of the candidate to inform the test centre whether they wish to take the Academic or General Training Modules. TOEFL (The Test Of English as a Foreign Language)

The Test Of English as a Foreign Language (or TOEFL , pronounced “toe-full”) evaluates the potential success of an individual to use and understand standard American English at a college level. It is required for non-native applicants at many US and other English-speaking colleges and universities. The TOEFL is the product of the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which is contracted by the private, non-profit firm, the College Board to administer the test in institutions in the US. There are two formats for the TOEFL test. The format you take depends on the location of your test center. Most test takers take the Internet-based Test (iBT). Test centers that do not have Internet access offer the Paper-based Test (PBT).

GRE (Graduate Record Examination )

GRE Exam is actually Graduate Recorded Exam. The Education Testing Service (ETS) directs The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) on behalf of the Graduate Record Examinations Board and the Council of Graduate Schools. GRE Exam chiefly a multiple-choice test. The GRE Exam scores have to be submitted by students aspiring for admission in international graduate school for Graduate program. Apart from the general GRE Exam there are about 12 GRE subject Tests offered by the program to help determine a students success in specific fields. In addition to this the GRE program also offers a variety of services and publications to help students transfer to their respective graduate program.

Both the GRE verbal and GRE math test in GRE Exam each yield a score between 200-800 points. Scores on the GRE analytical writing test are measured on a scale of 0 to 6 and is awarded in � points. Since only some of the graduate programs require the scores of The GRE Exam – Subject, students availing such course need only appear for it. The score on the GRE Subject test too ranges between 200 to 800 points. The student is given the choice of taking GRE Exam on paper or on the computer.

This section helps to determine the students writing and analyzing skills. There are two parts in this section that needs to be answered by the student. The first part has to be finished in 45 minute time limit. The student has to write an essay on the issue of a give topic. The second part deals with analysis of an argument and needs to be completed within 30 minutes. Of the 3 sections the writing test is the first to be taken.

The student is allowed to take the GRE Exam only once in a month and a total of 5 times in one year period.

The unofficial GRE scores of the tests are available to the student as soon as the GRE Exam is completed.

The official GRE scores are sent to the student and to the institutions to which the student would be applying within 10 to 15 days after the GRE Exam.
